Mission Statement

We at Trowell Church of England Primary School ("Trowell CofE") wish to work in partnership with our local community and others to ensure that our children can travel to and from school safely, in more environmentally friendly ways and with less disruption to our local residents.

The aim of our School Travel Plan is therefore to reduce the number of cars travelling to and from school, minimise traffic congestion around the school and improve the safety of pedestrian and cycle routes.


Objectives (inc. high level Targets)

1. To work with local authorities to develop a programme of measures to improve road safety and the environment for the Trowell CofE community by Summer 2001.

2. To reduce the number of cars parking in the immediate vicinity of the school (Derbyshire & Smithfield Avenues) by 40% during 2001.

3. To reduce the number of cars travelling to and from school by 25% during 2001.

4. To raise the level of travel awareness for parents, children and the school community throughout 2001.


Strategies & Activities

Delivering Objective 1- Road Safety Improvement Measures
1. Consult with Notts. County Council
· Invite County Councillor to meeting(s)
· Invite Area Highways Manager to discuss opportunities
· Discuss implications/opportunities with police representative
· Invite financial & practical support from Principal Travel Plans Officer
2. Consult with Broxtowe Borough Council
· Discuss available support with local councillor
· Identify potential support sources from council officers
3. Consult with Trowell Parish Council ("TPC")
· Invite parish councillors to represent TPC perspectives at meeting(s)
· Incorporate School Travel Plan on the TPC website
4. Plan Co-ordination
· Develop draft programme/plan of works for consultation with councils
and community by 30 June 2001

Delivering Objective 2- Reduce Parking in Derbyshire & Smithfield Avenues
1. Provide alternative drop off/short-term parking sites at The Festival Inn and Parish Hall
· Approach parish council for permission
· Approach Festival Inn management for permission
· Communicate with parents the need for change, the intent and benefit
of using new facilities and then appeal for support
· Prioritise improvement to Smithfield Avenue 'jitty' to ease access
· Investigate short cut opportunities from Parish Hall

Delivering Objective 3- Reduce Cars Driving to School
1. Set up a car sharing database
· Consult with parents to establish interest, create application form and
administer 'pools' of sharers
2. Identify walking and cycling routes to school
· Audit routes with children
· Consider route improvement opportunities with agencies like the
Groundwork movement and Parish Paths Partnership Project
· Publicise routes and promote use of safe crossing places
· Enlist adults to audit routes periodically using standard proformas
· Consider route specific child pedestrian and cycle training schemes
3. Establish safe and secure cycle parking site
· Consider location and fund security scheme

Delivering Objective 4- Raise Travel Awareness
· Enlist support via Road Safety & Travel Awareness Team's School
Travel Plan budget
· Implement a travel awareness programme within the community, with
parents and pupils and link with the school curriculum
· Develop a Pedestrian Charter
· Incorporate School Travel Plan issues within each school newsletter
· Include School Travel Plan information in Home/School Agreement
· Include School Travel Plan information in school prospectus
· Provide continual School Travel Plan updates for parents of each new
pupil intake


Monitoring & Evaluation

1. Convene regular steering group meetings to monitor progress and refresh the Trowell CofE School Travel Plan
2. Provide periodic written feedback to parents, pupils and the local community
3. Survey effectiveness of measures twice yearly

Appendix 1 - List of Works
(this list to be continually updated to reflect current programme of works being targeted through the School Travel Plan)

¨ Traffic lights at the junction of Nottingham Road, Ilkeston Road and Stapleford Road; relocating and supplementing the pelican crossing, making the school crossing patrol safer.
¨ Safe crossing over Stapleford Road opposite Trowell Park.
¨ Enhanced pedestrian safety under the Stapleford Road railway bridge.
¨ Drop off zones/short term parking sites at the Parish Hall and the Festival Inn car parks with safe walkways/ paths to school.
¨ Lighting/access improvements to Smithfield Avenue 'jitty'.
¨ Rear entrance and path into school.
¨ Improved designated walking routes.
¨ Improved designated cycling routes.
¨ Secure, dry cycle store.

This school travel plan has been drafted by a steering group, which meets at the school on a regular basis. The plan and actions arising from the plan need support from the community. The steering group would welcome any comments or suggestions and would welcome your attendance at the meetings.
